Hand Shaped Custom Surfboards
Jeff Hunt has been hand-shaping custom surfboards in Puna of the Big Island, Hawaii for over 20 years. Jeff learned this craft on the North Shore of Oahu, peering over the shoulder of what Surfer Magazine describes as “legend underground shaper” Leroy Dennis and added to his skills by watching the late Steve “Slick” Slickemeyer.
Jeff’s goals are simple, to build the highest quality surfboards for every type of surfer at any skill level. Whether looking for high performance, a recreational fun board or a long board – from beginner to advanced, Jeff will create the right surfboard for any requirement. Jeff also takes care of any ding repairs that are needed and his shop is packed to the rafters with used surfboards, surfing gear, skateboards, clothing and accessories.

The Road To Pahoa
Jeff was born in Oceanside, California and grew up on Moonlight Beach in North County, San Diego immersed in an evolving surf and skate culture. Jeff was one of the first to take ‘surfing to the streets’ and is considered a pioneer skating empty pools with Gregg Weaver (The Cadillac Kid), Bruce Logan, Scott Williams, Doug Nagy and Tom Netherton. Jeff has graced the pages of Skateboarder Magazine (1974 and 1976) being called one of the original “style masters” of the sport.
Jeff made the move to Hawaii in 1980 and lived on Oahu a few years before being drawn to the Big Island by the acclaimed Kalapana black sand beaches and surf break known as “Drain Pipes”. Shadowed by an active volcano, Kalapana and it’s treasures were sadly taken by lava in the early 1990’s. Jeff claimed “Bowls” at Pohoiki as his refuge and surfs there to this day.
Jeff’s reputation as a shaper continued to grow and in December of 2005, he purchased a building in Pahoa Village and Jeff Hunt Surfboards was born.
